Generic Email Gateway

In this article, you are going to learn about the SMTP and how to send data through the Email Gateway available on the Platform.

What is "SMTP"?

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, and is a communication protocol that allows the sending of emails through the internet from server to server.

In this case, one of the servers would be the email platform that you use to send the files (like Gmail) and the other one, the Email server that we provide you to gather the data.

The Platform's Email server

The EM Platform has a generic Email server available that you can use by adding a Generic Email Gateway to your account. This action creates a specific folder available just for your data.

NoteThe use of this Email server is free of charge, included in the license price.

The Email server from the EM Platform contains a list of File Formats mapped that can be used. Depending on the format, the data must be inserted in one way or another for the EMS to understand what's being inserted.

These File Formats are called Parsers.

Register an Email Gateway in the EMS

To register this gateway, follow these steps and select the Email Gateway.

Once in the settings of the gateway, you have to give it a name in the Platform, select your timezone, and select the File Format, from the list of available formats, that you are going to use to insert data into the Platform.

The gateway will automatically provide you with:

  • The SMTP server address of the Platform's Email server
  • The Port of the server.
  • And the Mail address, available just for you to send the data

Send data through Email

Once you have the Email folder created, by registering your Email Gateway, you can use the Mail address provided by the Platform to send your realtime and historical data using any Email server.

If you want to test the import of historical data is as easy as writing an email to the Mail address provided attaching the file formatted with the File Format (Parser) selected in the Gateway.

Inside the Platform, in the Email gateway section, there's a tab dedicated to the logs in the gateway, where you can easily visualize when the EMS is properly processing the files that are being sent to the Email server.

This can be very useful to discover if the reason why the data is not being inserted is that the format used doesn't match the chosen one on the Gateway.
